Marillion - They’re Not The Band You Think They Are

Marillion – They’re not the band you think they are. You may know them for the 80’s hit song “Kayleigh”. It is a great song from a fantastic album (“Misplaced Childhood”) without a doubt, however it is just one song. Judging the merits of Marillion as a band based on that song alone is sort of like judging Pink Floyd from the song Money, or Genesis by I Can’t Dance. It in no way is reflective of what the band is about; their history or their current way of life. By being familiar with only Money or I Can’t Dance one would be deprived of a vast wealth of incredible music from both bands; from Echoes to Supper’s Ready; Dogs to The Cinema Show; Comfortably Numb to Afterglow. It is a bit of a golden albatross in that “Kayleigh” elevated the profile of the band to a level that brought them mainstream awareness, but at the same time to those who only know the one song it is how they have come to be defined. This is the truly unfortunate part, for the fans that stuck with the band after their original lead singer/lyricist ‘Fish’ left in 1988 and those who have found them along the way; a whole other world of wonders has been their reward.

Steve Hogarth a.k.a. “h” entered the fold in January 1989 after the departure of Fish and a shift began in the type of music they created. What was once 70s Genesis-esque influenced progressive rock across 4 jester ladened albums has developed into a fantastically diverse, lush musical landscape over their subsequent 11 CDs (from “Seasons End” through “Happiness Is The Road”). Technically Marillion are what could be referred to as Cross-Over Progressive Rock, occupying an emotional realm somewhere between Pink Floyd and Radiohead. They have produced some absolutely magnificent albums such as Brave, Afraid Of Sunlight and Marbles, as well as a treasure trove of truly phenomenal songs. In fact, like Pink Floyd and Genesis, Marillion have a wealth of epic songs lasting 10 plus minutes (Ocean Cloud, This Strange Engine, The Invisible Man, Neverland, Happiness Is The Road). They also have dozens and dozens of songs just as great as the epics such as The Great Escape, Fantastic Place, The Hollow Man, …The Space, Estonia, You’re Gone, Go!, Somewhere Else etc etc… But what makes Marillion great aren’t necessarily songs of epic length or excellent musicianship, or great songwriting alone. I feel Marillion’s true greatness has to do with connection. The music, musicianship, lyrics and delivery are all seeped in the idea of making an emotional connection - however one interprets it or feels it. While the original band had great songs with heavy, intense lyrics and dramatic music, the h era has an emotional heart that resonates within every fan. Connection is the true essence of why I believe the band has sustained such a loyal fan base over 16 albums and almost 30 years. What drew young fans to the band, the wild adolescent 80s Fish era, is not what has sustained them. What has kept people has been the fact that what they have become and the music that they write strikes a pure emotional connection with them. It could be the repetition of the line “Wide awake on the edge of the world” in Go!, or it could be how the music “evaporates” into the ether two and a half minutes into The Invisible Man It could be the searing guitar solo in Asylum Satellite #1 or it could be the word “moon” morphing into a keyboard note in The Man Of 1000 Faces that then takes off into the stratosphere. The feelings these types of moments create are pure musical bliss for Marillion fans and something that binds them together on an emotional level.

On the day of their first full band show in Toronto since 1997 and only their 2nd tour of North America since then, I had the pleasure of meeting with bassist Pete Trewavas and guitarist Steve Rothery touring in advance of their 17th studio album “Sounds That Can’t Be Made due out in September 2012.

Darrin interviewing Pete Trawavas and Steve Rothery June 20 2012

Darrin: Hi guys welcome back to Toronto. I think this is the first time you’ve been here since the This Strange Engine Tour in 97.

Steve: You know I can’t remember. I know we played here for the Los Trios show but I can’t remember if we played here on the Marbles tour.

D: No the only place you played in Canada for Marbles was in Montreal. I saw the Los Trios show at The Mod Club in ’05.

Pete: Yeah I have very little recognition of it.

S: They all begin to blur together after 30 years. Toronto has a lot of good memories for us though….

P: Some bad as well (Pete got mugged in Toronto on the day of the show in 1997)

D: So you’re on the road in advance support of your 17th album Sounds That Can’t Be Made

S: Yes the album was supposed to be finished by now but unfortunately it isn’t. It is going to be a great, great album. The challenge now is just to finish it. We’re kind of working on it from the road as much as possible. I’ve done bits and pieces of guitars. Mark is doing some keyboards and Steve (Hogarth) is finishing some vocals. We upload them all to Mike (Hunter) back in the studio…

P: We sent some to Mike yesterday through Dropbox. It’s great that the technology is there to do that.

D: So you are working on the album while on the road in support of an album that isn’t out yet.

P: Yeah so Sounds That Can’t Be Made is kind of an apt title in some ways.

S: It is pretty full on as we travel a lot of the nights and we don’t really sleep properly but all of the shows have been amazing, but that kind of takes it out of you as well. Trying to find the time and energy and the focus to be recording stuff takes a lot of purpose to make it happen.

P: That’s the thing it’s very difficult to get motivated and you’ve got to be in the right frame of mind to be enjoying what you are doing and working out how to make it better.

S: In this situation the concerts take the priority but always in the back of your mind is the album as well.

D: You could have dubbed it “The Album That Can’t Be Bought” Tour.

Steve (laughing): or the “Sleep That Can’t Be Had” Tour. This is the beginning of the tour really. We’ve got most of the year touring around Europe, South America in October.

P: It’s Phase One really. But from a fan reaction point of view it is just fantastic.

S: It is going really well

P: I’ve had so many people that have come up to me who have said it is the best show they have been to and ….

S: …You say you should get out more.

P: It’s been really fantastic. I think it is better than our expectations were. Obviously our expectations are quite high. I think fan’s expectations are quite high cause we haven’t been here for so long.

D: I think fans always know it is going to be great. There is always variance in any live show you see from a band but anyone who knows you guys or has seen you over the years knows it is always a great show.

Mark (passing through): I wish we shared your confidence

D: It’s a different view from our side

P: We do care about what we do. We do want to put on a good show

S: You know we are perfectionists. The reason we’re still doing it is that we have an attention to detail and a drive to make it as good as we can humanly make it. So maybe from the audience perspective it might not show but for us there are some technical gremlins or someone isn’t feeling 100%.

P: Too hot.. that kind of thing…(It was 45C with humidity outside on the day of this show).

D: It’s interesting though because those technical moments that you have like the recent keyboard issue in New York

M: (passing by again) Really? I never heard about that one…(Steve H’s microphone stand broke and Mark had to hold the mic for him while he sang Three Minute Boy and play keyboards at the same time).

D: Those types of situations like This Strange Engine at the Montreal convention, those moments on stage can be absolutely derailing but as a fan when you see that kind of thing and how the band manages to deal with it…

P: We’ll that’s the thing isn’t it?

S: Yeah what happened in New York with Steve’s piano…there’s a great youtube clip that someone shot of it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUISegJT18M )….was really really funny and it made the evening really…

P: It did actually. The thing is like Steve said we are perfectionists and we like to be as professional as possible. There is a standard that we will refuse to go below. But when stuff around you is falling down you just have to sort of go with it.

S: I can’t tell you how many times we’ve come off stage and the audience are going crazy, they loved it and someone (in the band) says, “That was rubbish”. It doesn’t mean the concert was rubbish but they were dissatisfied with their own performance…

P (laughing): …or with everyone else’s performance. There are mind games at play. You only have to miss a note or do something where you think, “I wish I hadn’t done that” and it ruins the whole song for you.

D: So you played Montreal last night. Marillion as a band seem to have a special relationship with Montreal in particular. I was there for the 2 conventions and for the 2004 show for Marbles at The Spectrum and opened with The Invisible Man, which was followed by a 10-minute ovation.

S: Yeah it’s incredible for us really, it’s like a love and such a spiritual connection that the audience seems to feel for what we do…it’s probably one of the very best audiences we’ve played to. I mean we have amazing audiences all around the world. Paris sometimes is mind-blowing, or Amsterdam and Utrecht, Manchester in the northwest of England, but Montreal is definitely in the top 5 or top 3 of the audiences we play for.

P: The Invisible Man is a funny song as well because it’s not a song that I think…I would think that it is quite a difficult song to listen to…to get into. But you know when we toured with Deep Purple in Germany a couple years ago we opened with Invisible Man it went down a storm. And I can’t imagine many of the Deep Purple audience knowing that song. It must do something.

S: It’s very cinematic

P: Yeah I think it is a great…I’m very proud of that song.

D: Well it has what I think is a lot of the draw that people have to the band. It has such a heavy emotional connection and element that is prevalent in a lot of what you guys do that fans can relate to it in a way that … a lot of the lyrics and music have a very cinematic quality that you can immerse yourself in as a fan without necessarily knowing what it specifically might be about. And that song in particular definitely has that element.

Both: Yeah

D: Do you think that the success of the conventions that you did in 2009 and 2011 led you to doing this particular tour of North America?

S: No it is something we’ve been trying to do for a while. It is a nightmare to pull of logistically. Since 9/11 it is so difficult to tour. With the US you can’t even apply for a VISA. You have to apply for permission to apply for one. All these hoops you have to jump through and you have to factor in the nightmare of withholding tax and all the complications. But Lucy has worked really hard to make this happen. She deserves a load of credit.

P: Fantastic fans in Canada and America and we did feel it was time cause for the last couple of tours we’ve wanted to go to America but at the end of the day it was just too difficult. The thing is it takes about a year to start the process of filing the paperwork and gathering all the information they need for them to be able to process it in time, which is just ludicrous.

S: Which is why when we put this tour together the idea was the album would be finished and we’d be out promoting it, though obviously that hasn’t happened. Once it is in motion the dates are firm and you can’t really move them.

D: So how in that situation with an album that isn’t out yet do you decide what to present to the audience and what might be representative of the album?

S: For us it was what we felt we could do justice to given the fact that the album isn’t finished. Some of the parts and songs we’re still writing and recording. You have to base it on what is either complete or pretty complete which is why we chose “Power” and “Lucky Man”.

P: They are good songs to be playing cause they play well without too much work. They’re not necessarily that representative of the album, but then it’s an album of songs. It’s not an album with any particular musical theme or feel running through it. Each song stands alone. But they are all very, very strong. They’ve all got strong melody and lyrical content.

D: I know when you are working on an album you listen to it a thousand times in the process to the point that you never want to hear it again before it is even released but also there are those moments when you listen back and you go “Wow that’s awesome”.

P: There’s a few songs…there’s one song “The Sky Above The Rain”…. I’ve been concentrating on some other songs and I put this on the other day and I had completely forgotten about one of the sections and it just blew me away and I was thinking “My God that is just fantastic…That is going to be SO great when we play that live”. The thing is about all of this is I think we all get kind of frustrated when you get to a place where you just want to play the album to people. You just want to play the songs to people and see what they THEY think about it, because we’ve spent so long worrying about it and trying to work out what’s good and what’s bad an what needs to change that I just want to play it to people.

D: I think those are the moments where you are really proud as a musician in the creative process where you feel like Wow I’ve done something that I never would have expected which moves ME after hearing it so many times.

S: Yeah. This album has been a long time coming really to come up with something that we all agree is really special.

P: Because we’ve been together for so long and have worked on so much music together it does become harder to impress each other. It becomes harder to become inspired and excited about stuff. That’s why it has taken so long really. There is an integrity we want to keep. We could throw an album out in 6 months probably less if we wanted to but that’s not what we’re into doing. Every moment has to be special.

D: You’ve also done a lot of side projects in that time as well.

P: Sometimes it’s nice to just get away for a little bit.

S: It almost doesn’t take any longer cause there are times where people are doing things where all the gear has gone off somewhere…It’s good as well I think it keeps everybody…

P: It keeps it all fresh and it is very easy if you are not careful to take for granted, what we have. Not just with the fans but what we have with ourselves as well cause we’re very lucky to be working with the five of us. Cause we do inspire each other immensely. It really surprises me every time we come to write an album how excited we still get about the music we create together which is fantastic.

D: One thing I wanted to talk about was that apart from the band and that relationship, that in a lot of ways Racket Club (the band’s recording studio and home base) as a home base and that you all get along well, and have a place that you can go and create…that’s what a lot of bands lose as they move through their careers. Geographically they don’t have that interaction so much.

S: We’re incredibly lucky I mean all the musicians that have come in are so jealous of having somewhere where you can write, you can record, you can rehearse, store the equipment, run your web business and shop from. It is a perfect solution for a band in our position. I think a lot of bands have copied our approach. It’s one of the reasons we continue to do what we do.

P: Also having our own studio has made us more relaxed in the studio environment.

S: We’ve made lots of albums where it has cost 1000 Pounds plus each day. There’s nothing worse than being in one of those types of places when you’re not finished writing.

P: Yeah we’ve been there before haven’t we? That is frustrating.

D: Well you are your own timekeeper and you aren’t bound by any schedules

P: Exactly and we’re empowered to do truly what we want to do.

D: It’s interesting though there is a gap in the last 3 years since your last album but if you look at the amount of material you guys have done since 2004 which is only 8 years, you’ve done 5 full albums of material – 6 with the album you are doing now.

P: Yeah there was a lot. We were all a little emotionally drained after that. It’s hard to know where you want to go to next and what you want to say. What is there left to present to people?

S: The more albums you make the more tough it is not to repeat yourself and more pressure for Steve to come up with an album full of lyrics.

P (laughing): Or repeat your self in a clever way

D: I think everyone is really looking forward to it.

P: It is going to be a special album.

D: Whenever you guys have talked about albums in that manner it has always come to fruition.

P: It is a relief as well. We’ve gone through all of the stages…we had a lot of fun with it as well. It was tough at times. I did wonder whether we’d get it finished. But it was a lot of fun going to Real World, Peter Gabriel’s studio.

D: Had you been there before?

P: Never

S: I’ve been there once or twice to visit. It’s a great place to work; very inspirational. I think it is one of the reasons this album came together really. It gave us focus with two five-day blocks there.

P: It’s lovely having your own studio but it doesn’t mean you don’t go to other places. It can stop you being inspired. Sometimes new environments, new locations can just set something special off. And also all of us living together residentially all we were thinking about 24h a day were the songs. Particularly the song we had been playing the night before. You know you come down in the morning over breakfast and you can discuss it. It would give you at least twice as much time as we would normally spend together which really did help us focus and decide which songs were going to be on the album and how we were going to proceed with them.

D: What I wanted to talk about as well was how the fans have proactively been involved in your careers in a way that is very abnormal for bands and I’m curious of your take on that.

P: It is becoming more common…

S: A lot of people have adopted a similar relationship I suppose. I mean it can only REALY happen with an audience that is very passionate about what you are doing. I suppose it happened with the first pre-order Anoraknophobia. We had a history of releasing great music that our fans believed in us enough to do that. To make that leap of faith really in giving us their money a year before they would get anything in their hands. But with the growth of the Internet and social media, companies like Kickstarter…a lot of these things tie together. But in a way its only when the band’s been around and it’s established that you have enough of a fan base to do what we do that other bands have adopted similar principals to what we we’ve done. There’s a belief there…you find that with our audience wherever we play in the world there is a passion for what we do and a belief and I think in OUR passion and integrity in that we’ve never sold out and we always put the music ahead of any commercial consideration…as our bank managers can tell you. I think there is that mutual admiration and support for what we represent; one of the few bands making music in this genre at this level.

P: You know with Somewhere Else when we didn’t do the pre-order, fans were disappointed; they actually like to be a part of it. They feel like they are making a difference, not just to us but also to music in general and one better album to be out there.

D:I think it is a key thing though cause it allows fans..and it’s not just music…that as fans that involvement with being able to contribute you feel you are helping with the success…

S: It’s like a patron of the arts isn’t it? If you can support something that you love without your support or the support of people like you this wouldn’t exist in the world. I think that’s the thing, the direct correlation between that support and the freedom that we have to spend the time refining our ideas to the point where we’re happy. We could go and make an album in a week…but it wouldn’t be a very good album (laughing).

D: So you’re able to separate the sentiment from the things you do? There’s no burden of responsibility I’m imagining…

P: Um…you can’t allow there to be. I think that’s the thing. We have to be true to ourselves. To make the album we want to make. Luckily it’s worked so far. They get what we do and they get what we’re about and our responsibility towards music more than anything else really.

D: What I was thinking about is how historically the band started very much as a… there’s a youthful angry…

S: Naivety that comes from that

D: It’s something that is very nostalgic for fans to hold on to. When you grow up listening to something you always want to go back to that. What I find interesting is with Fish he has a great gift of how he writes words. He has a very interesting way of writing…very lyrical…but I think…and I might be inferring this…but the change with Steve H coming into the band that how you’ve developed since then as a band, and I’m not putting it on him as having necessarily driven this but, the way that he sings and what he writes about is something that as you get older you can relate to in a much more mature way that I think has extended the longevity why people are really interested in the band and what they get from it on an emotional level.

P: I think so

S: I think so…I think it’s a marriage of the music and atmospheres that we create and Steve makes a big contribution to the music as well. Musically the five of us there is a magic that happens. Great lyrics are very important. All my favourite songwriters are lyricists. But you have to have the whole package. You have great lyrics with so-so music it’s still not a great song. To have the combination of lyrics that are so heartfelt and powerful, and music that supports and enforces that…when you hit moments like that on songs like The Great Escape it’s just…..

P: Yeah…

D: That was actually my next point. Yes it’s a component of it, the lyrics and the vocal and the delivery but it’s the combination of that, with the fact that Steve you are very lyrical guitar player and Pete you are a very lyrical bass player…

P: And Ian as well…and Mark

S: It’s learning that you create the best music when it’s not about your own ego. It’s not about showing off your technical abilities.

P: Listening to everyone else really

S: Yeah and having the sensitivity…it’s almost like a musical telepathy where when….Pete and I especially…

D: But is all very lyrical – like the bass line in Quartz. And the guitar riffs and even solos you play are such heavily emotional; you listen to them and you want to cry.

P: Like the solo towards the end of This Strange Engine, which is not a big rock, solo but it is so moving… it is SO moving.

S: You know all of my favourite players combine melody and emotion that resonate with me. Guitar can be many things, but the thing that behooves me is hearing the emotion. It’s what makes guitar such as special instrument, the fact that you can put your soul into it and squeeze every ounce of emotion from each note…it takes a lot of focus. That’s what I try and do.

D: It truly is that component in all of you that in combination with Steve as a vocalist.

P:I think we all try in our own kind of ways

S: What’s interesting is that we all get off on working with different people and some amazing musicians but there’s a way that we create together. Sometimes it’s frustrating cause it’s very easy for us to be too familiar but at the same time there’s moments where only these five musicians could create it. You change anything even if it is a better musician then it wouldn’t be as good…It’s a strange, strange thing.

P: But it’s great it’s just something that happens.

S: It’s a magic

D: It’s really rare in music

P: How many years have we been sat opposite each other playing music? But when it happens we all get excited. We’re lucky on so many levels…we don’t murder each other (laughing).

D: The last question I have is did you ever imagine whey you were young being a part of such an awesome band?

P: No I never thought it would be approachable

S:I had a dream when I was about 16 about being on stage playing to an audience and having an amazing response. I had really just began playing the guitar then so it was a strange thing to dream at that age but it was remarkably close to how it does feel. From 15 that was all I wanted to do really was play the guitar.

P: You have to be single minded to actually get there. I used to spend all of my money on valves and strings. “What do you want for your birthday?” ..Money cause you need a new amp. You don’t go out, you don’t do stuff, you just sit there learning your craft.

S: You’re fixated and obsessed with it really

P: And it’s not about wanting to be famous. It’s not about wanting to be a star. It’s about enjoying music and wanting to share it.

S: There are musicians where it is all about wanting to be famous and yet they’re usually the ones who give up after a couple of years of slog. They’re not dedicated. But music, you know, it’s almost like a calling. It fulfills you on a level that nothing else can.

D: Thank you very much guys it has been a real pleasure.
